I don't really like to link to this blog, because it's often a really flip and shallow version of mainstream GLBT politics (Witness the unquestioned use of the acronym DINK - Dual Income, No Kids - a term originated by Pat Buchanan to perpetuate the myth of gay wealth.), but these stats underline something that Sarah Schulman's Ties that Bind: Familial Homophobia and Its Consequences treats in detail: Queers are routinely victimized by their families in myriad subtle ways that go unnoticed by the world at large.
Oh, now, that's not what the blog says. The blog is concerned with correcting the stereotype that we reject the family, instead of the other way around. But what other group would, in the current economic situation, engage in such obvious attempts to prove their worthiness to love and be loved by making themselves more economically vulnerable?
Seriously, read the Schulman book. The most important book of 2009. Seriously.
